are a group of Indian Ocean archipelagic islands in the Bay of Bengal, between the Indian peninsula to the west and Burma to the north and east. Most of the islands are part of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Union Territory of India, while a small number in the north of the archipelago, such as the Coco Islands, belong to Burma.
Corbyns cove beach is situated 7 kms from Port Blair. This coconut- palm fringed beach, is ideal for swimming, surfing and sun- basking . This is the only beach within the city ,safe for freaking out.
At the Cellular Jail which depicts the saga of countless martyrs of Indian independence struggle who laid down their lives. The show is conducted every evening in the premises of cellular jail which gives us a brief idea about the different practices adopted in the jail, prior to the independence.
Science centre explains the science of oceans, while allowing the visitors to create waves of varying parameters and explore their features. Here you can see the youngest rock sample found in India. It is a testimony to the under-crust activities still going on around the Barren Island. Finish with it and you are invited to the flora and fauna of the islands, to its tourist attractions or to the rare simulated view of the oceanic floor.
Gandhi Park in Port Blair is a small and beautiful park with amusement rides, a garden, a small narrow trail around a small lake inside the premises, water sports, historic remains of a Japanese temple and a war bunker.
The Gandhi Park was built in only 13 days around the Delthamani tank which served as Port Blair’s only source of drinking water in those days. This park is a good source of entertainment, especially for children.
Marina Park is just adjacent to the water sports complex right on the seashore is the marina amusement park offering rides for children and adults alike: giant wheels, paratrooper and dragon coaster and toy train..there is also a miniature botanical garden and a statue of netaji subash chandra bose here.this park, has amusement rides, children’s traffic park.
This Is unique complex offers all possible aqua-sport facilities like water-skiing, sail boats, windsurfing, speed boats etc., and safe water sports like paddle boats, row boats etc. there is a sea water swimming pool and a change room. there is also a memorial for the battle of aberdeen fought between britishers and andamanee aboriginals in 1859
Ross island is one of the andaman and nicobar islands, about 2 km east of port blair. it was the administrative headquarters for the islands, before an earthquake rocked it in 1941. the headquarters were then shifted to port blair. one can see remnants of an opulent past in the ruins of the church, swimming pool and the chief commissioner’s residence with its huge gardens and grand ballrooms. there is also a cemetery and a small museum managed by the indian navy. the museum has on display a collection of old records.
Viper island is near port blair in andaman district.and it was the site of the jail where the british used to imprison convicts and political prisoners. it has the ruins of a gallows atop a hillock. the jail was abandoned when the cellular jail was constructed in 1906.
The beach around the island is very famous for under water corals. it is ideal place for scuba diving and snorkeling. coral island with white sand beaches and surrounded by the pristine beauty of nature.the sea has gifted this island with all the splendor to attract any sea loving human. the coral reefs are gorgeously decorated by nature to stun the visitor.
Radha Nagar Beach is asia’s best beach and rated amongst the world’s top ten beaches. radhanagar beach in havelock island is one of the well-known beaches of andaman nicobar islands. being away from the main city gives the beach its prime importance. it is visitors’ most-favourite place as they flock to the beach to enjoy the clear waters. .
Baratang island is situated between middle and south andamans, approximately 100 kms from the capital city port blair. connected well through road and boats, the main transportation point is the baratang jetty. the road to baratang from port blair passes through the jarawa tribe reserve also known as andaman trunk road (atr route). hence, security personnel also travel for the safety of the tourists and the tribals in a convoy. interacting with them, giving them food or clicking their pictures is strictly prohibited and a punishable offence.
Baratang contains the only known examples of mud volcanoes in india. these mud volcanoes have erupted sporadically, with recent eruptions in 2005 believed to have been associated with the 2004 indian ocean earthquake. the previous major eruption recorded was on 18 february 2003. the locals call this mud volcano jalki. .
Mangrove creeks & lime stone caves
baratang is famous among tourists for lime stone caves and mangrove forests. the journey to the caves enthralls everyone as it takes you underneath the dense forest of mangrove plantations. for some it’s an experience of lifetime. baratang is one of the few select places on the earth where limestone caves can be found. special permission from the forest department at baratang is needed to visit the caves, which can be obtained from the baratang jetty. limestone caves remain closed on monday. it is advisable to carry drinking water and food packets while visiting the caves.
Snorkelling is the practice of swimming on or through a body of water while equipped with a diving mask- a shaped tube called a snorkel and usually swim fins. in cooler waters, a wetsuit may also be worn. this equipment enables the snorkeler to admire the underwater attractions for an extended period of time with relatively less effort. snorkeling is a popular recreational activity, particularly at tropical places and scuba diving locations. the primary appeal of this sport is the opportunity to observe underwater life in a natural setting without the complicated equipment and training required for scuba diving and without the exhaled bubbles of scuba-diving equipment.
Chatam saw mill the credit of being the largest and oldest wood mill in asia goes to the chatham saw mill. dating back to 1836, this mill is built on a tiny island and connected to port blair by a bridge. the mill acts as a store house for timbers like satin wood, marble, padauk, gurjan etc. having the second largest wharf of these islands, the island-mainland ships are harbored at this place. besides this, the place is also one of the most popular sightseeing destinations of andaman.
Cellular jail located in port blair, is a mute witness to the tortures meted out to the freedom fighters, who were incarcerated in this jail. the cellular jail, completed in the year 1906 acquired the name “cellular” because it is entirely made up on individual cells for the solitary confinement of the prisoners.the jail, now a place of pilgrimage for all freedom loving people, has declared as a national memorial.
